MTN has teamed up with Millicom, a Tigo company, to open for eCommerce business in Kenya.  African Internet Holdings (AIH) is expanding their online shopping business, already represented in more than 10 countries.

Kenya is a primary market for AIH as a result of its high internet penetration.  Some of their key brands are Kaymu, Jumia, Lamudi, Easy Taxi, HelloFood and Jovago.  MTN is looking to add value to a commoditised voice and data market through the expansion of online shopping platforms.

MTN is serious about their eCommerce expansion and committing an investment of over $300m to their online shopping business.

The online shopping business is a way for MTN to promote and expand the reach of their MTN mobile money which has grown by almost 50% this year to date.  This MTN online shopping expansion is educating and preparing customers for the entrance to the market of international eCommerce and mCommerce businesses.

Multinational eCommerce businesses wanting to get paid in Africa, and more particularly Kenya, can do so by linking to African Payment Solutions payment gateway for online payment including M-Pesa mobile payment.
