30 Jan Africa - Which Digital Currencies Do We Think Are Most Likely To Be Used And Adopted For Ecommerce Payment And Online Payments (Part 3)

Onlinbe payments and payment gateway Africa

This is the third in a series of articles on the crypto currencies or digital currencies we think will most likely be used for payment across Africa.  Although noone knows which one’s will be the forerunners over the next decade and a year in crypto advances like 10 years in the physical world. This is our best guess of the coins, tokens and currencies that are getting the most traction and adoption currently.  The space is maturing nicely and wallets and user friendly ways of transacting are improving.

Here’s our choice of digital currencies we currently expect to be the best for online payment across the African continent:

  1. Bitcoin (BTC)
  2. Bitcoin Cash (BCH)
  3. Dash (DASH)
  4. Monero (XMR)
  5. Zcash (ZEC)
  6. Litecoin (LTC)

7. XRP

Ripple is a large and well run for-profit company which provides a frictionless experience to send money globally using the power of blockchain. XRP is the token used by Ripple to raise capital and to transition value cross border almost instantaneously.  Financial institutions can process their customers’ payments anywhere in the world instantly, reliably and cost-effectively. XRP is an independent digital asset that is native to the XRP Ledger and can be used for institutional cross border payments. XRP can be used as an efficient settlement option for financial institutions and liquidity providers seeking global reach, accessibility, and fast settlement finality for interbank flows. Although largely institutionally focused, Ripple has developed a number of partnerships for consumer adoption and use of XRP.  Xago.io has developed an XRP-only exchange to over time construct the payment rails for cross border transacting across Africa. With its war chest, Ripple could well catalyse XRP to move rapidly up the ranks of digital currency consumer adoption.

8. TRON (TRX)

TRON has proven that good marketing and strategic acquisitions can trump better tech.  Tron strives to build the future of a truly decentralized internet and global free content entertainment system that utilizes blockchain technology. The TRON Protocol represents the architecture of an operating system based on the blockchain which could enable developers to create smart contracts and decentralized applications, freely publish, own, and store data and other content. Justin Sun founder of Tron is a master-marketer and genius when it comes to strategic partnerships acquisitions the likes of Samsung, Travala.com, gaming companies, dApps, D-Live and BitTorrent which collectively drive the use of and demand for TRX.

9. Stellar Lumens (XLM)

Stellar Lumens came into being as a fork of Ripple XRP code by Ripple founder Jed McCaleb in 2014.  The Stellar network is an open source, distributed, and community owned network used to facilitate cross-asset transfers of value.  Stellar aims to help facilitate cross-asset transfer of value at low cost while aiming to be an open financial system that gives people of all income levels access to low-cost financial services. Stellar.org, is a non-profit organization founded to support growth and adoption of Stellar.  Through the use of Lumens (XLM), a user can send any currency that they own to anyone else in a different currency. Stellar is very much focused on financial inclusion in emerging markets like Africa and is more of a small business and consumer focused coin as opposed to Ripple/XRP which is more institutionally focused.
